Soy Protein Health Claim
About FDA Health
Claims: Health claims authorized by the US Food
and Drug Administration (FDA) are one of several ways food labels
can
meet the needs of health-conscious consumers. The purpose of health
claims is to benefit consumers by providing information on healthful
eating patterns that may help reduce the risk of certain chronic
diseases.
Strictly defined, a health claim is a claim that expressly
or by implication characterizes the relationship of any substance
or its presence to a disease or health related condition. Since
1990, only 14 health claims have been authorized.
The Health Claim on Soy Protein: Food products that
contain a minimum of 6.25 grams of soy protein per serving are allowed
to feature one
of two claim wordings, one
of which reads: "25 grams of soy protein a day, as part of a
diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, may reduce the risk of
heart disease. A serving of (name of food) supplies ___ grams of
soy protein." The other claim label food manufacturers may use
reads: "Diets low in saturated fat and cholesterol that include
25 grams of soy protein a day may reduce the risk of heart disease.
One serving of (name food) provides ___ grams of soy protein."
Additional Requirements – Heart Health: To
make this claim, a product must be in line with heart health requirements,
it may
not contain more than a maximum of 3 grams
of total fat, 1 gram or less of saturated fat, a maximum of 20
mg of cholesterol and a maximum of 480 mg of sodium.
