Choline Nutrient Content Claim
About Nutrient Content Claims: Under
the Nutrition Labeling and Education Act (NLEA) , foods and dietary
supplements can use claims
called "nutrient
content claims." These claims describe the
level of a nutrient or dietary substance in the product, using terms
such as "good source," "high," or "free." Nutrient
content claims may only be made if FDA has a regulation specifying
the criteria that a food must meet in order to use the claim. With
few exceptions, nutrient content claims can only be made for nutrients
or dietary substances that have an established daily value. The requirements
that govern the use of nutrient content claims help ensure that descriptive
terms, such as "high" or "low," are used consistently
for all types of food products and are thus meaningful to consumers.
The Choline Nutrient Content Claim: To
qualify for the "Good
source of choline" label
claim, a food or supplement must contain 55 mg of choline per serving,
and 110 mg per serving to make an "Excellent source of choline" claim.
These levels are 10% and 20%, respectively, of the Adequate Intake
(550 mg) for choline established by the Committee on the Scientific
Evaluation
of Dietary Reference Intakes of the Food and Nutrition Board, part
of the National Academy of Sciences' Institute of Medicine.
