St. Louis, February 4, 2010
In response to the catastrophic earthquake in Haiti, Solae, LLC, a St. Louis-based soy technologies and ingredients company, has united with "Soyfoods Haiti Alliance Relief Effort" – now being coined "SHARE," a partnership between the St. Louis-based World Soy Foundation (WSF), European-based Bridge2Food and Malnutrition Matters – to share information and network amongst soy industries in the United States, Canada and Europe who wish to respond to the disaster in Haiti.
With 80 percent of its population living in poverty and a per capita income of less than $400, even before this disaster, Haiti was one of the poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere.
"Haiti has battled malnutrition long before the recent earthquake disaster," said Torkel Rhenman, CEO— Solae. "This country needs food, especially nutritious, high-protein foods to help those who survived this disaster. We hope through partnering with industry organizations, we can help members of the Haitian community receive the nutritional nourishment they so desperately need."
Solae has committed to matching employee donations to raise money to bring soy-based foods to the people of Haiti, and the company is donating some soy ingredients to help with immediate relief. In addition to allying with the "SHARE" program, Solae and WSF also are looking to work with St. Louis-based
Meds and Food for Kids (MFK), an organization dedicated to saving the lives of Haiti's malnourished children and other nutritionally vulnerable people.
The WSF's branch "World Initiative for Soy in Human Health" (WISHH) has been active in Haiti for the past five years with a school of 320 girls in Port-au-Prince and has thus seen the extreme poverty that exists in Haiti.
"The malnourished needs of Haiti extend far beyond these initial efforts," said Nathan Ruby, executive director— WSF. "We are committed to a long-term impact on this country, and we're excited to partner with other organizations and companies like Solae to ensure soyfoods are being fed to those with the greatest need."
St. Louisans can help with this relief effort by donating on the World Soy Foundation site at
